His post-midpoint approach is to treat the box as the actual problem, refuse both the 1969 frame and Cosmo's information-control manifesto, and let the team's specific competences carry the work. Young Marty transfers Republican Party funds to the Black Panthers and routes Nixon's personal account to "the National Association to Legalize Marijuana."1 Cosmo articulates the method out loud — "Posit, the phone company has too much money. Consequence? They're corrupt. Result? The system perpetuates itself at the expense of the people. Conclusion? Ma Bell needs to donate some money."2 "We're gonna change the world, Marty."3 Loser goes for pizza; Marty loses.4
2. [3m] Cosmo arrested; Marty escapes by accident.
Marty leaves the dorm to get pizza. Police arrive in the gap. When he returns, Cosmo is being taken; Marty flees.[^w1] The only on-screen dialogue is Cosmo's "Marty! Marty!" as he's pulled away.5
3. [5m] Present-day cold open — "Martin" over comms.
A voice — gentle, paternal — calls "Martin. Martin. It's time."6 Bishop wakes; Carl reports positions for the operation in progress.7 The voice that wakes him is a team member on comms, not a memory.
4. [5m] (Equilibrium) The Centurion Bank sneak — Bishop runs the penetration from the van.
Bishop coaches Mother through the alarm wiring while Mother free-associates about the CIA causing the Managua earthquake;8 Crease cuts the patter ("I can't talk to that guy");9 Whistler listens to intercepted audio with his eyes closed.10 The team is in their stations, the patter is comfortable, Bishop is the calm center.
5. [9m] The bank boardroom — Bishop debriefs the executives and gets the check.
Bishop sits with the bank's board, explains that their communications were vulnerable, their fire exits unmonitored, their guards undertrained.11 "But first, who's got my check?"12 An executive: "people hire you to break into their places to make sure no one can break into their places?"13 Bishop: "It's a living."14
6. [11m] (Inciting Incident) Gordon and Wallace recite the team's records and end with "Mr. Brice."
Two men in expensive shoes walk into the office.15 They go through the team — Mother's Dannemora time, Carl's Oakland school district hack, Whistler's "little problem with the phone company," Crease's CIA termination — and then one of the agents turns to Bishop: "And then there's Martin Bishop. He doesn't seem to have a past."16 Bishop tries to leave; Gordon's last word as he goes: "Mr. Brice."17 They have his real name and the warrant.
7. [14m] (Resistance / Debate) The Janek file briefing — "If I say no?" / "Don't say no."
A homeless man on the sidewalk says the government took away his home; Bishop walks past him back into the office.18 Gordon sets out the file: Dr. Gunter Janek, large number theory, $380,000 grant traced to Russia, intercepted fax about a "little black box," project name Setec Astronomy.19 $175,000 on delivery, the warrant quashed, the record cleared.20 Wallace: "Your pal Cosmo got 12 years, and that was without flight to evade prosecution. We all know what happened to him in there."21 Bishop: "If I say no?" Gordon: "Don't say no."[^w2]
8. [17m] (Commitment) The team meeting — "All right. What do we need?"
Bishop tells the crew about the warrant; Crease objects to the lying about the name ("we're your partners");22 Bishop puts the choice to them — "this is not a test. The penetration is live. The target is unaware."23 Whistler: "I can't speak for the other guys, but I'm in it for the money. I don't care if you go to jail."[^w3] Mother: "Could we maybe just go back to the 'they might kill us' part?"[^w4] Crease closes it: "You guys'll be chalk outlines without me. All right. What do we need?"[^w5]
9. [18m] Bishop recruits Liz at her music classroom.
"We're not getting back together."24 Bishop is there on business; he needs someone to translate Janek's lecture.25 Liz refuses across multiple takes; Bishop tries the truth — "they found me, Liz. The government found me. They offered me a deal."26 Liz: "You and I are not getting back together. Pick me up at 3:00."27
10. [21m] Janek's lecture — Liz reads the implications.
Janek lectures on the number field sieve and the Artin map.[^w6] Bishop tries to ask Liz if she's seeing anyone; Liz shushes him three times.28 Liz: "This isn't just about large number theory. It's about cryptography... I mean unbreakable codes."29 Janek closes: "Maybe, just maybe there's a shortcut."30 Liz: "I'll bet you anything he's found it. If he has, you're in over your head."31
11. [23m] Gregor in the foyer — the Russian in plain sight.
Gregor calls Bishop's name across the lobby and embraces him; he calls Liz "Elizabeth"; he extends an invitation to the Kiev string quartet at the consulate Thursday night.32 His new title: "Cultural attache."33 Bishop: "Unbelievable!" Crease, watching from outside: "I don't trust that guy."34
12. [24m] Janek's office surveillance — "He's got a service. What's he need an answering machine for?"
The surveillance van outside Janek's building; Mother in disguise, Carl on monitors, Crease running the lobby distraction.[^w7] Rhyzkov interrupts Janek's password entry; the team can't get the keystrokes.35 Whistler — listening, not looking — catches it: "Fellows, Janek's little black box is on his desk, between the pencil jar and the lamp."36 "He's got a service. What's he need an answering machine for? There's our little black box."[^w8]
13. [29m] (Rising Action) The Janek heist — lobby distractions, then Bishop in the office.
Mother delivers the NASA-faked-the-moon-landings speech as he hands Bishop a microphone.[^w9] The team coordinates four separate distractions to get past the receptionist; Bishop and Crease defeat an electronic key pad with a captured device "from the other side";37 Bishop reaches Janek's office and lifts the answering machine.38
14. [32m] Bishop talks Rhyzkov out of the office on improvised lines fed through an earpiece.
Rhyzkov walks in unexpectedly; Bishop covers her mouth, then tells her he's a private investigator hired by Janek's wife in Montreal — Velma Janek, family real estate, two shopping malls.39 When Rhyzkov threatens to kill Janek for the affair, Bishop redirects her into a small speech about loving him anyway: "And never let him know that you know what he thinks you don't know you know."40 Carl in the earpiece suggests "and give him head whenever he wants"; Bishop converts it on the fly to "give him help. Be a beacon in his sad and lonely life."41 Bishop walks out with the box.
15. [36m] (Through the dinner party) The team articulates what they want with the money.
"Chain of Fools" plays over the drive home;42 then a dinner with Crease's wife where Mother's UFO speech crosses Liz's quiet question to Bishop.43 Liz: "you and Cosmo, you were taking all these chances, all these big chances... what for?"44 Bishop: "We were young. And there was a war on. It was a good way to meet girls."45 Liz: "How come you didn't get caught?" Bishop: "I went out for pizza. Then I went to Canada... He wasn't. He died in prison."46 Bishop goes around the table for the wishes — Crease and his wife to Madrid, Lisbon, Athens, Scotland, and Tahiti; Mother for a Winnebago with a big kitchen; Carl for a deep relationship with a beautiful woman who melts the first time their eyes meet ("we're not getting paid that much, Carl");47 Whistler: "Peace on earth, goodwill toward men."48 Each wish will be paid out at the wishlist negotiation.
16. [39m] Scrabble — "Setec Astronomy" unscrambles to "Too Many Secrets."
The Scrabble game runs in the foreground; the team also has the box hooked up.[^w10] Mother offers nonsense unscrambles ("Special extraterrestrial... Earthling counter").49 Bishop tries the letters at the board ("Monterey's Coast"; "My Socrates Note"); they keep going.50 Bishop in the lab: "Stay in that quadrant. Try another quadrant."51 Then Mother: "Holy cow."52 Carl reads the board: "Too Many Secrets."53 The anagram lands at the same beat as the box's first successful penetration of an encrypted target.
17. [43m] (Escalation 1) Federal Reserve, power grid, air traffic — "No more secrets."
Carl calls out targets from his book: Federal Reserve transfer node ("$900 billion a day goes through there");54 National power grid;55 Air traffic control system.56 Each one falls. Crease: "How is this possible?" Bishop explains Janek's shortcut.57 Crease, three times: "Turn it off."58 Bishop: "It's the code-breaker." Then quietly: "No more secrets."[^w11] Sets up the failed-handoff sequence.
18. [46m] The night before the handoff — lockdown.
Crease sends his wife and daughter home; Liz tries to leave; Crease keeps her: "There isn't a government on this planet that wouldn't kill us all for that thing."[^w12] Bishop: "Carl? Hit the alarm. Mother, lock everything down."59 Liz: "Thank you for the trust, fellows."60 The team sleeps in the office overnight, protecting the box.
19. [48m] The handoff goes wrong — Janek dead, the agents weren't NSA.
Bishop hands Gordon the box at a federal building; Gordon asks if there were any problems; Bishop says no.61 A team member calls Bishop away — "telephone! It's your mother."62 Crease intercepts: "Get in the car. Now! Janek's dead. They killed him."63 Bishop, in the car: "The NSA doesn't kill people. Who are they?" Crease throws Bishop's own line back: "You said there isn't a government on earth that wouldn't kill for that thing."64
20. [52m] Mother surfaces the cover.
The homeless man delivers his refrain — "they took away my home. The government took away my home."65 In the office Mother has the file: the federal building has been scheduled for demolition since August, vacant for a month; the NSA has no San Francisco office.66 Bishop: "They probably were government. Just not ours."67 He tells the team to pack up and leave. "What do you think you're doing?" / "I'm going to a concert."[^w13]
21. [53m] Confronting Gregor at the consulate — Bishop identifies Wallace.
Bishop walks into the Kiev string quartet reception and pulls Gregor aside.68 Gregor swears Russia didn't take the box: "Your codes are entirely different from ours. We never had any luck in breaking them."69 Gregor produces the catalog of turnable American agents; Bishop spots Wallace.70 Gregor's face changes when he sees who Wallace works for: "You disappeared once before, my friend. I suggest you do it again."71 Bishop refuses; Gregor offers diplomatic asylum inside the parked car.72 Then the fake FBI arrive. Gregor's last words to Bishop: "You won't know who to trust."73 In the gap that follows, Gregor is killed and Bishop is taken.[^w14]
Through the Commitment: The first eight beats install Bishop in three different registers — the boy who went out for pizza in 1969, the working sneaker who runs the bank penetration from the van, and the man whose real name is "Mr. Brice" and is being said back to him by people in expensive shoes. The Janek-file briefing closes the brief debate ("don't say no") and the team meeting closes the commitment — Crease's "what do we need?" makes the project everyone's. The leverage was tailored to Bishop's exact vulnerability, the project is now collective, and the rising action is the Centurion Bank operation transferred to a target the team doesn't yet understand. Liz comes back into the working world; Whistler's ear finds the answering machine; Bishop talks Rhyzkov out of the office on lines fed through the earpiece.
22. [58m] (Midpoint) Bishop wakes in a dark room and Cosmo walks in alive.
Wallace is there — "Pain?" / "Yeah." / "Try aspirin."74 Then Cosmo, soft-voiced, apologetic about Wallace.75 He lays it out across one bounded conversation: prison, the older "family men" who arranged his early release, the financial reorganization for the network, the encryption protecting it from federal eyes — "if the feds get Janek's box... disaster. Therefore, we must have it."76 Then the bigger frame: "What's wrong with this country, Marty? Money. You taught me that... money's most powerful ability is to allow bad people to continue doing bad things at the expense of those who don't have it."[^w15] He uses the 1969 dorm-room rhetorical structure — Posit, Consequence, Result, Conclusion — to describe crashing banks, then the stock market, then the whole damn system.77 "Destroy all records of ownership. No more rich people. No more poor people. Everybody's the same. Isn't that what we said we always wanted?"78 Then the database move: tomorrow they retrieve Bishop's prints from the gun that killed Gregor; the day after, the FBI database surfaces the alias Cosmo can now access "thanks to you."79 "Pain?" / "Try prison."80 Bishop is hooded and removed. Cosmo's last line: "No more secrets, Marty."81

Bishop at Liz's door, beaten.82 Liz: "You got hit over the head twice and got thrown out of a speeding car?"83 She tends the cuts; Bishop apologizes twice.84 Liz: "The paper said that Greg was killed... I called your number, and someone else answered. I didn't recognize the voice."85 Bishop: "I can't do this alone, Liz." Liz: "I'm here."86
24. [69m] Calling the real NSA — Abbott on the line, Crease's stress meter, Whistler routing.
The news report confirms Bishop is framed for Gregor's murder; Crease wants to surrender; Mother says they have nothing to trade.87 Bishop: "We make the call, but we make it our way."88 Whistler routes the call through nine relay stations and two satellites;89 Crease wires up a voice stress meter.90 Bishop reaches Abbott at Fort Meade ("Setec Astronomy" gets him through).91 "Can you guarantee my safety?" / "Yes, I can guarantee your safety."92 Crease: "Bish, he's lying."93 Whistler: "Hang up. They've almost got us."94

Bishop: "I don't know where it is, remember?"95 Whistler: "What did it sound like? The road. When you were in the trunk, what did the road sound like?"96 Across the next sequence Whistler walks Bishop back through the trip — the bridge, the absence of a foghorn, the seam patterns in the concrete, the railroad tracks, the recurring rough bumps, the "cocktail party" sound at the end.[^w16] He narrows it to PlayTronics. "Remind me to make you an honorary blind person."[^w17]

Bishop: "What's behind the hill?" / Mother: "Nothing. It's private property."97 Carl identifies laser fencing and high-voltage perimeter — "the whole building says, 'Go away.'"98 Bishop: "It's Cosmo. I know it. The toy company's a front."99
27. [76m] Surveillance — Whistler maps the building by sound.
Mother feeds Whistler room coordinates; Whistler identifies a bathroom by silence, an emergency exit by recharging floodlight batteries, Cosmo's office by ultrasonic motion sensors "more powerful than I've ever heard."100 "Bish, someone is very serious about keeping people out of that room."101 Bishop: "Let's figure out who works next door."102
28. [78m] Planning the infiltration — Werner Brandes is the way in.
Carl produces the corporate blueprints from the county recorder ("$50 buys a lot");103 Crease demos the mantrap with the voiceprint card he borrowed from the manufacturer.104 Bishop: "My name is Martin Bishop. My voice is my passport. Verify me."105 The team narrows the candidates for "the guy whose office is next to Cosmo's" to Werner Brandes — single, 6'1", 174 pounds, "a very safe driver," member of the International Microchip Designers Association ("Great. The world's most boring human").106 Liz reads Werner's trash and sees the kind of date he wants — "the man who folded this tube of Crest is looking for someone meticulous, refined."107 Liz volunteers.
29. [83m] Liz's date with Werner — getting "passport" on tape.
"Werner? Hi. I'm Doris."108 Across the dinner Liz steers Werner toward saying the words on the voiceprint card: "I would really like to hear you say the word... 'Passport.'"109 Werner: "Passport." / "Passport."110 Liz: "Check, please."111 The voice-card fragment is captured.
30. [87m] Voice synthesis — "Hi. My name is Werner Brandes."
The team splices Werner's recorded fragments into the full passphrase: "Hi. My name is Werner Brandes. My voice is my passport. Verify me."112 Bishop, disguised as a gardener, infiltrates PlayTronics for the planting work; Liz is on a second date with Werner at his home, distracting him with a monologue about monkey-cage diets while a team member retrieves the access card.113
31. [91m] The PlayTronics infiltration — the two-inch crawl across the heated room.
Bishop in the building, voice card good, cameras feeding to the team.114 The synthesized passphrase plays at the mantrap: "Hi, my name is Werner Brandes. My voice is my passport. Verify me.[^w18] Carl: "98.6 and holding." Whistler: "We got body temp, Crease." Crease: "Go."115 Bishop reaches the box and swaps the chip. Intercut at Werner's home: Werner plays the recording back, Liz hears her own voice, the cover is blown.116
32. [96m] Werner brings Liz to PlayTronics — Cosmo's deduction.
Werner takes Liz back to the building and produces the recording for the guard.117 Cosmo arrives, lets Liz go to the cab, then stops her: "A computer matched her with him? I don't think so."118 Cosmo's intelligence kicks in; the team's cover story dissolves.
33. [101m] (Escalation 2) Cosmo on the intercom — "I cannot kill you. You have to trust me."
The guards locate Liz; Bishop is trapped above the corridor in the air ducts with the box.119 Cosmo's voice on the intercom: "You should not have come back, Marty. I won and you lost... You always had to be the one to win."120 Then, softer: "She's lovely, Marty. Please bring me the box. I am your way out... If I wanted you dead, you'd be dead. I cannot kill you. You have to trust me."[^w19] Bishop, on the radio: "Guys, I'm going in. Do you hear me, Carl?"121

Bishop walks in with the box. "How are you?" / "Fine. How are you?"122 Cosmo takes the box. Wallace moves in to kill Bishop; Bishop yells, "Goddamn it, you gave me your word!"123 Cosmo, soft: "I cannot kill my friend." Then to Wallace: "Kill my friend."[^w20] Bishop signals: "Now. Carl, now!" Carl: "Geronimo!"124 The team breaks through; Crease comes in with a gun on Liz's captor — "I'm an excellent marksman. Woman! Move!"125 Bishop has handed over a decoy; the chip is in his pocket.
35. [108m] Rooftop escape — Wallace catches Crease and Mother in the van.
Bishop, Liz, Carl, and Whistler reach the roof and signal the van.126 Crease confirms the fire escape is clear — "Coming to get you."127 Wallace intercepts the van: "Put your hands where I can see them and step out of the van. You too, midnight."128 Carl on the radio: "Bish, they've got Crease and Mother."129
36. [109m] Whistler drives the van — "I'm driving!"
Bishop: "Whistler, you've got to do it." Whistler: "Drive what?"130 Bishop talks him through it from the roof — reverse, then forward through the gate, then turn left, then straighten out.131 Crease, captured in the back of the van, finally answers Bishop's old question — "Did I ever tell you why I had to leave the CIA? My temper" — and beats his guards.132 Whistler, exhilarated: "Oh, God, I'm driving! I'm driving!"133
Through the Midpoint: The Federal Reserve / power grid / air traffic test (Beat 17) escalates the assignment into an existential weapon — Bishop's quiet "no more secrets" is the line Cosmo will throw back at him. The handoff to the fake NSA is the failure of the initial approach; Mother surfaces the cover, Bishop confronts Gregor, Gregor identifies Wallace and gets killed for it. The midpoint itself is one bounded conversation in a dark room: Cosmo isn't dead; the prank wasn't a prank; the world is being run by the people Cosmo describes. Cosmo uses the 1969 dorm-room rhetorical structure to outline crashing the financial system, and uses Bishop's "no more secrets" line to seal the inversion. The 1969 frame collapses, and Bishop's name is being weaponized rather than restored.
37. [112m] (Climax) The PlayTronics rooftop — Bishop walks away.
Cosmo on the rooftop with the (decoy) box and a gun. "You will give me the box right now, or I will kill you right now."134 Bishop: "No." Cosmo fires once, deliberately wide. Bishop: "I thought you couldn't kill your friend, Cos." Cosmo: "I missed on purpose."135 Bishop drops the box at Cosmo's feet — "take the goddamn thing. I don't want it. You win, I lose. That's what you want, isn't it?"136 Cosmo: "Yes." Then the manifesto: "The world isn't run by weapons anymore, or energy or money. It's run by little ones and zeroes, little bits of data... It's all about the information."[^w21] "We started this journey together." Bishop: "It wasn't a journey, Cos. It was a prank."[^w22] Bishop turns and walks. "If you want to stop me, you'll have to pull the trigger."137 Cosmo doesn't.
38. [115m] (Wind-Down) The team in the van — "Not one word."
Carl: "I can't believe we actually made it back."138 Mother: "I can't believe we pulled off the greatest sneak in history and we can't tell anybody."139 Carl: "You know what I can't believe? Tomorrow's Thursday!"140 Bishop: "Not one word."141 Brief celebration before the NSA arrives.
39. [116m] The wishlist negotiation — Abbott in the parking lot.
Abbott emerges from the NSA convoy: "I'm Bernard Abbott, National Security Agency... I believe you have something that belongs to me."142 Bishop names the play — Greg said the codes were on different systems, the box is no good for Russian traffic, "the only thing it would really be good for is spying on Americans... no wonder they don't want to share with the other children."143 Abbott: "What do you want, Mr. Bishop?" Bishop: "Clear up my record. Get out of my life."144 Then each team member's dinner-party wish: Mother's Winnebago with burgundy interior;145 Crease's first-class tickets to Madrid, Lisbon, Athens, Scotland — and Tahiti, which Abbott objects is not in Europe ("when you get the box, then you give us geography lessons");146 Carl asks for the NSA agent's phone number, and gets it directly from her — "273-9164. Area code 415. I'm Mary."147 Whistler: "I want peace on earth and goodwill toward men." Abbott: "We are the United States government. We don't do that sort of thing." Bishop: "You're just gonna have to try."[^w23] Abbott takes the box. Bishop: "You know it doesn't work. It never did." Abbott: "That's not important... none of this ever happened. This box doesn't exist."148
40. [120m] Epilogue — the 1969 prank, on the news.
Crease: "All you did was say it was broken. Can't they still just hook it up and do terrible things with it?"149 Bishop: "Nope."150 News anchor: "In a surprise announcement, the Republican National Committee has revealed it is bankrupt... they just don't know where the money has gone."[^w24] "But not everybody's going begging. Amnesty International, Greenpeace, and the United Negro College Fund... announced record earnings this week, due mostly to large, anonymous donations."151
Through the Climax: The falling action is the team approach assembling around what each member can specifically do — Whistler reconstructs the route from the sounds Bishop heard in the trunk, Carl gets the building blueprints for $50, Crease borrows the mantrap demo and runs the stress meter, Mother runs the surveillance feed, Liz reads Werner's trash and goes on the date. The PlayTronics infiltration is the new approach in extended execution — the synthesized voiceprint, the two-inch crawl across Cosmo's office, the chip swap. Escalation 2 is Cosmo's intercom speech — "I cannot kill you" — that forces Bishop to walk back into the room with the (decoy) box. The handover stages "I cannot kill my friend. Kill my friend" as the second-most-painful Cosmo line, and the climax follows on the rooftop: Cosmo with the gun, Bishop with the chip, the manifesto refused in language ("it wasn't a journey, Cos. It was a prank"), Bishop walking away, Cosmo's hand staying down.
Wind-Down and new equilibrium: The wishlist negotiation pays out the dinner-party setups one-for-one — Winnebago, Europe and Tahiti, phone number, peace on earth. Abbott takes the dead box with the cover story he needs. Then the news report loops the 1969 prologue back as the wind-down's last image: Republican accounts drained, Amnesty / Greenpeace / United Negro College Fund funded. The new equilibrium incorporates the growth — Bishop's name is cleared, the team knows him, Liz is back inside his life — and the original 1969 gesture is completed without the 1969 frame. The film places cleanly in better/sufficient: the post-midpoint approach was the right one, it held at the rooftop, and the world rewards it in the small specific forms the post-midpoint approach was built to honor.
The Two Approaches Arc
The shape of Sneakers is the gap between the man who wakes up to "Martin" over comms in Beat 3 and the man who walks away from Cosmo's gun in Beat 37. The man in Beat 3 is Martin Bishop, and "Martin Bishop" is a function of "Martin Brice" being sealed off — a name kept from the team, a 1969 prank whose only on-screen survivor is the man who tells it as a story about going out for pizza. The leverage in the inciting incident is exact because the leverage is the seal. Gordon and Wallace know to end on "Mr. Brice," and the rest of the film follows from the seal being broken.
The initial approach is the Centurion Bank operation — Bishop runs it from the van, the patter is comfortable, the team trusts him absolutely without knowing him, and the work goes smoothly. The film stages this as competence (the bank job works) and then as failure (the same approach hands the box to people Bishop doesn't really know). The midpoint is one bounded conversation in a dark room. Cosmo uses the 1969 dorm-room rhetorical structure ("Posit, Consequence, Result, Conclusion") to describe crashing the global financial system, and uses Bishop's own "no more secrets" line to seal the inversion. The 1969 frame the equilibrium was built on is gone in a single scene.
The post-midpoint approach assembles itself across the falling action as the team's specific competences — Whistler's ear, Liz's read on Werner, Carl's eye, Mother's electronics, Crease's stress meter — applied to the actual problem (recover the box and engineer leverage against everyone who wants it). The PlayTronics infiltration is the approach in extended execution; Escalation 2 (Cosmo on the intercom) raises the stakes to maximum; the climax is the rooftop, where Bishop refuses both the 1969 frame and Cosmo's frame in language and Cosmo's hand stays down.
The wind-down has two acts. The wishlist negotiation pays out the dinner-party setups one-for-one and articulates the film's argument that small concrete human wants are the right scale of want — a Winnebago beats crashing the financial system, a phone number beats no more rich people. Then the news report loops the 1969 prologue back as the last image: Republican accounts drained, Amnesty / Greenpeace / UNCF funded. The original 1969 gesture is completed without the 1969 frame — Bishop has done what he and Cosmo said they would do, but on his terms and with the team in the front seat. The film places cleanly in better/sufficient: name cleared, team intact, box neutralized, gesture honored, equilibrium restored on the new approach's terms.
