In the book version of How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell, the dragon known as the Green Death (the book's equivalent to the movie's Red Death) meets a very different end than its cinematic counterpart. There is also a second dragon of the same species, the Purple Death, involved in the climax.
Hiccup devises a plan to get the two massive Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus dragons (the Green Death and the Purple Death) to fight one another. He uses his ability to speak Dragonese to insult them and trick them into a territorial dispute. The two behemoths engage in a massive battle on the shores of Berk, leaving them both exhausted and wounded.
During the chaos, the Green Death manages to swallow Hiccup alive. While inside the dragon’s throat, Hiccup manages to survive by clinging to the dragon’s internal anatomy.
While inside the Green Death's gullet, Hiccup realizes he is standing near the dragon’s "spew-holes"—the vents in the throat that release the flammable gas used to breathe fire. Hiccup uses his Viking helmet to plug these vents. He jams the horns of his helmet into the soft tissue of the spew-holes, effectively blocking the dragon's ability to release its fire.
Outside, the Green Death prepares to finish off the Purple Death (and the gathered Vikings) with a massive blast of fire. However, because Hiccup has plugged the vents, the fire cannot escape the dragon's throat. The pressure and heat build up instantly within the dragon’s own body. The Green Death effectively explodes from the inside out due to the backfire.
Hiccup is thrown from the dragon’s mouth by the force of the explosion/sneeze just before the beast dies. He is saved from falling into the sea by his small hunting dragon, Toothless (who, in the books, is a tiny common green dragon, not a Night Fury).
The Purple Death is also mortally wounded in the encounter and eventually dies or retreats into the ocean to die, leaving the Vikings of Berk victorious.
The AI mentions a sneeze but misses the fact that Toothless intentionally induced it to rescue Hiccup.
The AI suggests the Purple Death might have retreated, but the book explicitly states the Green Death killed it.
In the book version of How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell, the dragon known as the Green Death (the book's version of the Red Death) is defeated through a combination of strategy and a daring internal sabotage. Hiccup uses his ability to speak Dragonese to trick the Green Death and another giant dragon, the Purple Death, into a lethal fight. The Green Death kills the Purple Death but is left exhausted. Hiccup is then swallowed by the Green Death. While inside the dragon's throat, Hiccup uses the horns of his Viking helmet to plug the dragon's 'fire-holes' (the vents for its fire-breath). Toothless, Hiccup's small Common or Garden dragon, saves Hiccup by flying into the Green Death's nostril and tickling it, causing a massive sneeze that ejects Hiccup. When the dragon subsequently attempts to breathe fire at the Vikings, the blocked vents cause the fire to backfire, resulting in a massive internal explosion that kills the Green Death.
