In the 2011 film The Raid (also known as The Raid: Redemption), the main character is Rama (played by Iko Uwais), a rookie member of an elite 20-man SWAT squad. His journey is defined by a layering of professional duty, personal stakes, and the desperate need for survival.
Rama has three primary goals that evolve as the film progresses:
Rama faces a series of escalating obstacles that turn a tactical raid into a brutal battle for survival:
The setting itself is a primary obstacle. The apartment block is a claustrophobic maze of narrow hallways, stairwells, and crawl spaces. Tama controls the building's infrastructure, including a surveillance system that allows him to track the police movements while they remain "blind" to his traps.
Early in the raid, the team is spotted by two young lookouts. Once the alarm is raised, Tama uses the building's PA system to offer a "lifetime of free rent" to any tenant who kills the police officers. This instantly turns every resident—hundreds of armed thugs, addicts, and desperate killers—into an enemy.
The SWAT team is quickly trapped in a hallway ambush where they are fired upon from above and below. Rama and his team quickly run out of ammunition, forcing them to transition from firearms to knives and Pencak Silat (Indonesian martial arts) in grueling hand-to-hand combat against overwhelming numbers.
Midway through the film, it is revealed that the mission was not officially sanctioned by the police department. It was a rogue operation led by Lt. Wahyu to cover up his own corruption. Consequently, no reinforcements are coming, and the team is completely isolated from the outside world.
Beyond the nameless thugs, Rama faces "boss-level" obstacles:
Rama must navigate the moral complexity of his brother's role in the criminal empire. Andi initially refuses to leave, as he has found power and status within Tama’s organization. Rama faces the obstacle of trying to "save" someone who may not want to be saved, while also dealing with the betrayal of his own commanding officer, Wahyu.
No oversights detected.
In The Raid (2011), the main character Rama (Iko Uwais) has a professional goal to capture the crime lord Tama Riyadi and a personal goal to rescue his estranged brother, Andi, who works for Tama. His obstacles include a 15-story apartment block filled with hostile tenants (offered permanent residence to kill the police), a lack of ammunition, a corrupt commanding officer (Lt. Wahyu) who staged the unsanctioned mission, and elite fighters like the Machete Gang and Mad Dog.
