In the 1999 film Office Space, the characters’ fates at the end of the movie are largely a commentary on the absurdity of corporate life. While the film is a comedy, nearly all the "protagonists" find a way to escape the cubicle "prison," while the corporate antagonists suffer losses of status and control.
### Who Ends Up Better Off?
#### 1. Peter Gibbons
* At the Start: Peter is a soul-crushed programmer at Initech, stuck in a loop of traffic jams, TPS report errors, and answering to eight different bosses. He is profoundly depressed and dating a woman who is cheating on him.
* At the End: After a hypnotherapy session gone wrong leaves him in a state of permanent relaxation, Peter stops caring about corporate consequences. By the film's end, the Initech building (and the evidence of his embezzlement) has burned down. He finds fulfillment working in construction with his neighbor Lawrence. While the pay is likely lower, he is physically active, working outdoors in the sun, and has achieved the peace of mind he lacked in an office.
#### 2. Milton Waddams
* At the Start: Milton is the office "ghost"—a man who was actually laid off years ago but continued to receive a paycheck due to a payroll glitch. He is bullied by Lumbergh, who moves his desk into the basement and steals his beloved red Swingline stapler.
* At the End: After finally snapping and burning the building down, Milton discovers the envelope of traveler's checks (stolen money) that Peter had left in Lumbergh’s office as a confession. Milton flees to a luxury resort in Mexico. While he is still seen grumbling and threatening to "poison the guacamole" over minor service issues, he is objectively wealthy and free from his basement cage.
#### 3. Joanna
* At the Start: Joanna is a waitress at Chotchkie's, a corporate-themed restaurant where she is constantly harrassed by her manager (Stan) to wear more "flair" (buttons/pins) to express her personality.
* At the End: After being inspired by Peter’s "don't care" attitude, she quits Chotchkie's in a blaze of glory. She gets a new job at a rival restaurant, Flingers, where the management is less micromanaging and "flair" is not required. More importantly, she is in a healthy, happy relationship with Peter.
#### 4. Tom Smykowski
* At the Start: A terrified middle-manager who fears being "downsized" and spends his time fruitlessly trying to sell his "Jump to Conclusions" mat idea. He is so stressed that he attempts suicide (only to have it fail in a series of comedic accidents).
* At the End: While attempting to move his car, Tom is hit by a drunk driver. Paradoxically, this is the best thing that happens to him; he receives a massive multi-million dollar legal settlement. He ends the film in a full-body cast but is genuinely ecstatic because he is now wealthy and never has to work again.
#### 5. Michael Bolton and Samir Nagheenanajar
* At the Start: Both are talented programmers who are summarily fired by "the Bobs" to make room for cheaper, entry-level labor. They face the prospect of unemployment or "federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison" for their embezzlement scheme.
* At the End: Because Milton burned down the evidence of their crime, they avoid prosecution. They both secure new jobs at Initrode, Initech's main rival. While they are still in an office environment, they are employed and have escaped the looming threat of prison.

### Who Ends Up Worse Off?
#### 1. Bill Lumbergh
* At the Start: The all-powerful, passive-aggressive Vice President of Initech. He drives a Porsche, micromanages everyone, and treats his employees as disposable assets.
* At the End: Lumbergh’s "kingdom" is literally ashes. His office is destroyed, his subordinates have either quit or moved on, and the money Peter returned (which could have saved Lumbergh from looking incompetent regarding the missing funds) was stolen by Milton. While he likely still has a job in corporate America, he has lost his status, his office, and his favorite target (Milton).
#### 2. Initech (The Company)
* At the Start: A thriving, albeit soul-sucking, tech firm going through a "restructuring" to maximize profits.
* At the End: The company ceases to exist in its current form. The physical building is destroyed, and the "Bobs" (the consultants) are left standing in the smoking ruins, realizing their job of "cleaning up" the company ended in total catastrophe.
#### 3. Stan (Chotchkie's Manager)
* At the Start: A petty tyrant who uses "flair" to control and belittle Joanna.
* At the End: He loses one of his best employees and is publicly humiliated by her during her exit. He remains stuck in the same dead-end managerial loop, but without the satisfaction of successfully breaking Joanna's spirit.
