Shinji Mimura is a key character in the *Battle Royale* novel, manga, and film, known for his intelligence and attempt to subvert the Program through technological means. He is listed as **Boy #19** of Class 9-B.
## Who is Shinji Mimura?
* **Personality and Skills:** Shinji is described as an attractive, athletic student and the ace guard of the school's basketball team. He is highly intelligent, especially in **computers and hacking**, a talent he learned from his deceased uncle. He is sometimes referred to by his classmates as **"The Third Man"** for his strategic and independent nature.
* **Motivation:** His uncle was a former critic of the totalitarian government of the Great Republic of East Asia and was killed by them, which gives Shinji a deep-seated contempt for the regime controlling the Program.
* **Allies:** His primary ally in the Program is his best friend, **Yutaka Seto**.
## Shinji Mimura's Plan
Shinji's overall goal was to **disrupt and end the Battle Royale Program** by attacking its command center, the schoolhouse, and the systems running the game. He develops his plan in two phases:
### Phase 1: Hacking (Failed)
His initial plan was to use his hacking skills to manipulate the Program's system.
* **Goal:** He attempted to hack into the school's computer system, which controls the surveillance and the explosive collars worn by the students. In the novel/manga, his specific intention was to register his and Yutaka Seto's explosive collars as "dead" so they could be overlooked by the Program and escape the island.
* **Result:** This plan was thwarted. In the manga/novel, the game administrators were able to monitor his progress because the student collars had hidden microphones. In the film, he and his group successfully infiltrate the system, but the teacher, Kitano, manually resets it before they can complete their work.
### Phase 2: The Bomb (Execution)
After the hacking plan failed, Shinji moved to a more direct, destructive approach.
* **Goal:** To build a high-powered **homemade bomb** and detonate it inside the school building (the Program's base of operations) to destroy the computer systems and communication equipment, thereby throwing the entire Program into chaos and allowing any surviving students a chance to escape.
* **Construction:** He and Yutaka Seto collected materials to build the device. He used the explosive charge from a knife (his assigned weapon's side item) as the bomb's **detonator**. In the manga, he affectionately names the bomb **"Fumiyo's Revenge"** after a deceased classmate to encourage Yutaka.
* **The Attack:** Shinji, along with his allies, attempts to place and detonate the bomb at the school. In the climactic confrontation, the bomb explodes, causing massive destruction. The explosion is visible across the island and, in the film, it successfully **injures and blinds Kazuo Kiriyama**, temporarily taking the most dangerous killer out of the fight.
