Vertigo (1958) Vertigo

Vertigo is a 1958 psychological thriller directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring James Stewart as John "Scottie" Ferguson, a retired San Francisco police detective hired by an old acquaintance to follow the man's wife Madeleine, played by Kim Novak. The film also stars Barbara Bel Geddes as Midge Wood, Scottie's friend and former fiancée. (IMDb)

Adapted from the 1954 novel D'entre les morts by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac, the screenplay was written by Alec Coppel and Samuel A. Taylor. Bernard Herrmann composed the score. The film was photographed by Robert Burks and edited by George Tomasini.

Vertigo was a critical and commercial disappointment on release but has since been widely reassessed; it topped Sight & Sound's decennial critics' poll in 2012.
