Paul Verhoeven's adaptation of Philip K. Dick's "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale," with Arnold Schwarzenegger as Douglas Quaid — a construction worker who buys a memory implant of a Mars vacation and wakes up convinced he was once a secret agent named Hauser. Whether his ensuing adventure is real or a hallucination inside the implant is the film's central ambiguity.
