The climax

The climax is one shot in the street outside Sara's house. Alonzo has been beaten to the ground; the neighborhood he has performed authority over for years has stepped out onto stoops and porches to watch^b27. Alonzo offers the assembled Damu a bounty to put one in Jake's head, and nobody moves^b28. He dares Jake to shoot him; Jake holds the Beretta level and cannot fire the lethal shot^b29. The lead-up is a sustained reversal of Alonzo's kingdom played in front of the kingdom itself.

The audience-certainty moment is the single non-lethal shot. Alonzo decides Jake will not pull the trigger, turns his back, and walks toward the duffel of cash. Jake answers him with the day's lesson — "I'm not like you"¹ — and fires once, into Alonzo's buttock^b30. The shot is the verdict on the wolf-and-sheep speech: Jake refuses the lethal answer the wolf model demands, refuses the sheep answer Alonzo has called him for ninety minutes, and finds a third gesture that disables without crossing the line. He picks up the bag of money and the evidence and walks through the parted crowd. The post-midpoint approach (refuse Alonzo, act independently, survive with the family and the soul intact) is tested at maximum stakes and it holds — under the eyes of the Jungle, with the gun in his hand, with the man who tried to kill him on the ground.

The wind-down differs because

Alonzo's destruction completes itself without Jake's intervention. The King Kong speech plays to an empty street^b32; the Russians collect the midnight debt at LAX offscreen^b33; the radio report dresses Alonzo's death as a decorated officer killed serving a warrant^b34; Jake walks through his own front door into a mirror of the opening image^b35. Each of these executes a verdict the buttock-shot has already settled. The radio cue is the wind-down's commentary register — the institution absorbing Alonzo without learning anything — but it does not retest Jake's mission.

Why this is a validation climax

The post-midpoint approach forms across the falling action: Jake naming Roger's killing as murder and armed robbery in the car^b19, refusing the detective shield, surviving the bathtub via the value he held before any of this started^b23,b24, and choosing to walk back into the Jungle toward Sara's house rather than home to Lisa^b25. By the time Alonzo turns his back, the new approach is fully built. The shot tests an already-formed understanding under maximum pressure and confirms it. Better tools, sufficient — with the radio report holding the bittersweet shading.
