The certainty-moment is one word and one image. The trawler is sinking under rifle fire, the perimeter is collapsing, the runner has just reported Germans breaking through the dunes, and Winnant has answered "this is it."b31 Bolton stands at the end of the mole with binoculars, sweeps the horizon, lowers the glasses, and answers Winnant's "What do you see?" with "Home." The camera pulls back to reveal a horizon filled with civilian vessels — pleasure yachts, fishing boats, tugs, sloops — coming toward Dunkirk. Soldiers begin to cheer; boat horns sound; Zimmer's slowed Elgar "Nimrod" rises.b32
The mission sentence — get the army home; improvise civilian rescue when the institutional rescue fails — is tested and answered in that single reveal. The institutional rescue has been failing for an hour of screen time: the hospital ship bombed at the mole (b6), the first destroyer sunk by Stukas (b14), the second torpedoed with men cheering on deck (b19), the trawler grounded outside the perimeter and taking fire (b24–b29). Bolton named the workaround in expository terms at b23 — small boats can load from the beach — but the workaround had not yet appeared. The horizon reveal is the moment the appearance happens. The audience becomes certain in the same second Bolton does: the rescue is going to work, by means the institution did not produce.

The 32-minute wind-down is unusually long because Nolan uses it to deliver the redefinition theme (survival as victory) at length and from multiple registers.
Why this is a validation climax
The post-midpoint approach — improvise; load shallow-draft civilian boats from the beach; redefine success as deliverance — is built across the falling action as practice (Dawson refusing to turn back; Peter pulling Collins from the cockpit; the Highlanders waiting for tide) and as policy (Bolton authorizing the small vessels pool at b23). By the time Bolton lifts the binoculars the approach is already formed; the climax is its confirming appearance. The horizon reveal is the bell sounding on a mission already running. Validation in the bittersweet edge of better/sufficient — Casablanca-adjacent — with the wind-down showing what was paid for the result while affirming the result was real.
