Quadrant: Better tools, sufficient — classical comedy / redemption arc, with a doubled better/insufficient shadow on Hammond. Grant grows into the paternal capacity he opens the film disowning, and the new capacity is exactly what carries two children through a collapsed park to a helicopter. The shadow reading — Hammond's "spared no expense" engineering hubris is dismantled and the island is quarantined — is the cost the wind-down absorbs without unsettling Grant's quadrant.
Initial approach: Read what is dead. Treat children as interruptions to that work. Take Hammond's money for three more years of digging and stay otherwise unbothered.
Post-midpoint approach: Read what is alive — the same evidence-tracking instinct redirected from bones to behaviors — and treat the two children as the work. Get them up the tree, into the truck, over the fence, to the kitchen, to the helicopter.
Equilibrium. The Snakewater dig in the Montana badlands. Grant pulls a velociraptor skeleton out of the rock with ground-penetrating radar; Ellie works alongside; a class of student volunteers drinks beer in the camp tents. A chubby kid mocks the raptor's chicken-like profile; Grant scares him with the curved claw, narrating the disembowelment in detail. Ellie slaps Grant on the shoulder. Paleontology as life — bones read from absence, children read as nuisance, no clients.
Inciting Incident. Hammond's helicopter lands on the dig and blows the tarp off the bone bed. Hammond lets himself into Grant's trailer, finds the champagne, pours three glasses, and offers to fund three more years of Snakewater in exchange for a weekend signing off on the island. The disruption is tailored — money for the digging Grant cares about in exchange for a public-facing job he doesn't.
Resistance / Debate. The plane and helicopter ride out. Grant ties the two female ends of his seatbelt into a knot under his hat. Ellie laughs. The lawyer Gennaro is along; Malcolm is along; Grant is along on terms he has not yet examined. The resistance is to engagement — Grant is going as a contractor, not a participant. Brief.
Commitment. The brachiosaur reveal on the tour-vehicle ride from the helipad. The jeep crests a rise. Grant sees the animal step its full length over the tree line, stands up in the moving vehicle, blindly turns Ellie's head toward it without looking away, takes off his hat, sits down on the grass. "It's a... it's a dinosaur." He looks past the brachiosaur to a herd at the lake and asks Hammond how fast they are, what species, how he did this. The contractor stance ends here. Hammond's "we're going to make a fortune" lands flat against Grant's silence, which is the irreversibility.
Rising Action / Initial Approach. The visitor-center tour. The Mr. DNA cartoon, the amber-and-mosquito explanation, Henry Wu and the population-control lecture. The lunch debate where Malcolm says the scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could that they didn't think whether they should, and Hammond defends the project with "spared no expense." The hatchery, the raptor paddock, the cow being lowered into the foliage. Throughout, Grant is reading the park as a paleontologist reads a dig — extracting how it was made — while keeping the two grandchildren who arrive by helicopter at arm's length. Tim follows him to the car talking about Grant's book; Grant ends up in the second car with both kids and Gennaro.
Escalation 1. Nedry's sabotage and the storm. The control-room evening as the tropical storm closes the island down: Arnold smokes at his console, Hammond reluctantly pulls the non-essential staff off; Nedry types the white-rabbit command at his terminal, kills the security systems and the perimeter fences to cover his theft of the embryos, and walks out into the rain with the Barbasol can. The cars stall in the T-Rex paddock with the rain starting. The escalation that causes the midpoint — Nedry's keystroke is what makes the next scene possible.
Midpoint. The T-Rex attack on the explorer cars. The goat tether is empty. The water cup ripples on the dashboard. The fence is dead; the T-Rex steps through it and onto the road. Gennaro abandons the kids and runs to the maintenance bathroom. Malcolm draws the animal off with a flare, gets thrown through the bathroom wall. The T-Rex flips Tim's car onto its roof; Grant climbs down with a second flare, draws the T-Rex away, then comes back and pulls Lex out of the wreckage and Tim out of the upended seat. From the moment Grant carries Lex up the embankment with one arm, the children are his work. The night ends with the three of them asleep on a tree branch as a brachiosaur grazes the canopy at dawn — Grant's hand on Lex's shoulder, the new approach made visible before it is named.
Falling Action / Post-Midpoint Approach. Grant and the kids cross the park on foot. They climb a tree to escape; they encounter a herd of gallimimus running over the plain (Grant grabs Tim and pulls him down behind the trunk so Tim can watch), then watch the T-Rex take one out of the herd; they reach the perimeter fence and Grant drops onto it just as the power comes back on (Tim takes the shock and Grant administers chest compressions and the kid count count). Inside, the adults move in parallel: Ellie and Muldoon take the gas-powered jeep to the visitor center; Hammond and Ellie share the ice-cream scene where Hammond tells the story of the Petticoat Lane flea circus and Ellie tells him control was always the illusion. Grant, meanwhile, is doing what Hammond paid for the wrong way — running an unscheduled field trip that is teaching him what the brochures couldn't.
Escalation 2. The maintenance-shed run. Arnold has not returned from throwing the breakers. Muldoon and Ellie take the gas-powered jeep down. Muldoon spots the raptor in the brush and tells Ellie to run; she reaches the shed alone, throws the lever sequence Arnold described, and reaches into the conduit panel — Arnold's severed arm comes off the wires in her hand. Muldoon, stalking what he thinks is the lead raptor, looks left and meets the eye of a second one in the brush: "Clever girl." She kills him. The post-midpoint approach is no longer Grant-and-kids alone — the adults' rescue plan has been counter-ambushed and the raptors are inside the human spaces.
Climax. The kitchen. Tim and Lex have been left in the visitor-center dining room while Ellie radios the maintenance shed; two velociraptors push through the swinging doors and stalk the children through the stainless-steel kitchen. Lex hides behind a prep table; her reflection is mistaken for her body and a raptor lunges at the metal cabinet. Tim leads the second one through a walk-in freezer and slams the door on its tail. The intercut control-room beat: Grant and Ellie reach the terminal, Lex sits at it ("It's a Unix system, I know this!") and brings the door locks back online. The post-midpoint approach is tested with Grant not in the room with the kids — they are alive because of what he gave them to do, and Lex closes the loop by saving the adults too. The test passes.
Wind-Down. The visitor-center rotunda. Two raptors corner Grant, Ellie, and the kids against the standing T-Rex skeleton; the live T-Rex crashes in and kills both raptors as the "When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth" banner falls across the frame. Outside, Hammond is waiting in his jeep with the cane. The four pile into the helicopter; Hammond looks at the amber cane head one last time as the island recedes; Grant, in the back seat with Tim and Lex asleep against him, meets Ellie's eye across the cabin. The new equilibrium falls into place: the man who scared a child with a raptor claw at the start is now the chair both children sleep on. The island is leaving them; the paternal capacity is staying.
