Quadrant: Better tools, sufficient — classical comedy / heroic-intervention with cost. Fallon's post-midpoint shift from procedural defusal to reading the antagonist succeeds at the highest stakes; the last bomb is defused and the ship is saved. The cost is real (squad members and ship's stewards killed at the midpoint), but the climactic test of the new approach is passed. The film operates a doubled-climax structure across ensemble locations: Fallon's wire-cut and McCleod's London arrest of Buckland are the same climax in two places, cross-cut so each requires the other.
Initial approach: Defuse the devices by the Royal Navy bomb-disposal manual. Work the team, follow the procedural sequence, treat the antagonist as anonymous.
Post-midpoint approach: Stop trusting the procedure; trust the read of the antagonist. After the booby-trap death proves Juggernaut has anticipated the manual, Fallon improvises — entering through the faceplate, talking back to the antagonist's voice over the phone, betting the wire-cut on his ear for the lie.
Equilibrium. Fallon's prior bomb-disposal job, end-of-shift banter — "the undefeated champion," "no contest," "a quick chat to an admiral and then..." The cocky professional in his element, just won, ironic distance from the work.
Inciting Incident. The admiralty briefing. Fallon is told that Juggernaut has planted seven bombs on the Britannic, that a demonstration bomb has just exploded aboard, and that the Royal Navy intends to parachute a bomb-disposal team into heavy seas. The disruption is precisely tailored to Fallon's professional self-image — a man whose ironic competence the film has just established is being asked to carry it onto a heaving deck.
Resistance / Debate. The Whitehall policy meeting between Porter (Ian Holm) and the Home Office: government refuses to authorize payment of the ransom "to resist extortion by terror"; Porter argues "responsibility to 1,200 people aboard my ship." The institutional fight over what tools are even available — pay or fight — runs in parallel with the assembly of Fallon's team.
Commitment. Fallon accepts the assignment at the briefing. Walk-away closes: he commits to leading the parachute drop and defusing the bombs aboard. The off-ramp is a spoken yes; everything after this is operational.
Rising Action. Team assembly, helicopter loading, the long parachute drop into the heaving North Atlantic. The bomb-disposal procedure begins on the deck: locate the barrels, prepare the cutting tools, work through the first device by the manual. Concurrent: McCleod begins the London investigation, working through retired and disgruntled bomb-disposal men.
Escalation 1. The demonstration bomb detonates aboard the Britannic ahead of Fallon's first scene, raising stakes from threat to demonstrated capability. The clock starts: Juggernaut sets his deadline; Brunel (Omar Sharif) keeps the ship moving at minimum speed; the heavy weather makes a passenger evacuation impossible.
Midpoint. The booby-trap explosion at ~58m. Fallon's standard route into a device triggers a hidden booby trap; a bomb-squad member, two seamen, and a ship's steward are killed. Intercut with London: McCleod meets Buckland at home for an alibi check, audience sees the antagonist's face for the first time. The procedural approach is broken in one bounded scene — the manual has been used against the men who wrote it.
Falling Action / new approach. Fallon shifts: "going to try entering the device through the faceplate." Improvisation replaces sequence; he stops trusting the manual route and starts reading what the booby-trap design implies about the man who built it. In London, McCleod's net tightens — "all except two, who've gone missing" — and Buckland's alibi for the day begins to wobble.
Escalation 2. The first wire-cutting defusal at ~79m. Fallon and Braddock (David Hemmings) successfully defuse a bomb through the faceplate approach with Jeff coaching by ammeter. Blue wire cut clean; bomb safed. Rehearsal for the climactic test at lower stakes — the new approach works once, but more bombs remain and the clock has not stopped.
Climax. The final bomb at ~105m. Fallon on the phone to Buckland, brought to the line by McCleod's London arrest. Buckland walks Fallon through the device by mentor-pupil banter — "I thought you'd taught me everything I knew, Sid" — and instructs "Cut the blue wire." Fallon, listening to his teacher's voice for the lie, first relays the instruction to his squad as a test — "Cut the blue wire" — then catches what he hears underneath it and reverses at the last second: "Red, lads! Cut the red. R-e-d, red!" Red cut; bomb safed. The post-midpoint approach — read the antagonist in real time, not the procedure — is tested at maximum stakes and holds.
Wind-Down. The bridge. "Fallon is the champion" — Brunel's quiet line, repurposing the opening's "undefeated champion" with the irony slightly evaporated. Brunel offers Fallon a drink; Fallon: "What, at 6:00 in the morning?" Brunel: "Thanks very much." The new equilibrium falls into place: the sardonic professional is still the sardonic professional, the ship is intact, the cost is named in the absent squad-mates but not narrated. The Revised Approach was the ideal approach available — there was no purely procedural path that could have worked against a former Royal Navy bomb-disposal man.
