Quadrant: Better tools, sufficient. The Rocky placement, intensified — the climax does not validate the externally-posed contest (Wallace dies on the rack) but validates the post-midpoint approach's own test (refuse the plea, choose the word, spend the body publicly on your own terms). The wind-down (Bannockburn) confirms the spending bought the political project.
Initial approach: Free Scotland by leading an army that forces the nobles' commitment. After Murron's killing, fight the English garrisons, build a movement, win the field battles, hand the institutional path to the Scottish lords with enough force behind it that they have to take it.
Post-midpoint approach: The nobles will never commit even when they appear to. Spend the body publicly as the political instrument. Hunt the betrayers personally, walk into the noble-brokered trap knowing it is one, refuse the plea at the scaffold, die with the chosen word.
Equilibrium. The secret wedding to Murron in the candlelit glade and the consummation in the woods.b13 Wallace in his element — charm, the heart-is-free inheritance from his murdered father, education from Argyle, the stated intention to come home and farm and raise children.b7 b12 The private-register approach in its purest staging.
Inciting Incident. The village square. After Wallace fights off two English soldiers attempting to rape Murron,b14 Hesselrig drags her to the post and cuts her throat in front of the assembled village.b15 The disruption is precisely tailored to the initial approach — the private register is aimed at by a power that does not honor it. Wallace's opt-out cannot absorb this.
Resistance / Debate. Compressed to action. Wallace rides into the square disguised as surrender, then draws and kills the soldiers. The villagers join him and storm the garrison; Wallace cuts Hesselrig's throat in mirror of Murron's killing.b16 Vengeance, not a project — the resistance and the debate are skipped because the body has already done the answering.
Commitment. The post-garrison gathering at the camp. Campbell takes whiskey to his wound; the MacGregors arrive saying they will not be left out, and Wallace tries to send them home. They refuse — the English will burn their villages anyway. Wallace welcomes them.b17 The bounded scene after which Wallace's project has changed without explicit announcement: he is no longer the avenger of one woman, he is the lead of a movement other people are committing to.
Rising Action / initial approach. The Lanark raid, where Wallace kills the prima-nocte lord and tells the survivors to "tell them Scotland is free."b18 The recruiting and the long-spear plan; Stephen of Ireland joins;b21 Faudron is killed exposed as an assassin.b22 The Bruces' debate (the leper father's "ability to compromise makes a man noble"; Bruce's admiration for "uncompromising men").b20 News reaches the camp that the English are advancing on Stirling and the Highlanders are coming down on their own; Wallace asks "are you ready for a war?"b22
Escalation 1. Stirling. Wallace, in blue face paint, intercepts the retreating Scottish levy and delivers the speech: "they may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom." The levy turns back.b23 b24 The cavalry-vs-pike trick — feign retreat, draw the English horse, lift the long spears at the last moment — routs the heavy horse.b25 The political-mediated approach reaches its high-water mark; in the Edinburgh chamber that follows, Wallace is knighted Sir William Wallace and declared Guardian of Scotland.b26 The escalation forces the question Edinburgh refuses to answer: will the nobles now commit?
Midpoint. Falkirk, the visor-lift. After the Welsh archers, the Irish defection, and Mornay and Lochlan's bought retreat, Wallace charges Longshanks alone and is intercepted by a masked English knight in heavy armor who runs him through with a lance and unhorses him. Wallace pulls off the helmet — it is Robert the Bruce, the noble who had personally pledged "and so would I" at Edinburgh.b27 b32 The political-mediated approach breaks in a single image. Wallace is dragged from the field; he says nothing.b32
Falling Action / new approach. Campbell dies in Wallace's arms saying he has lived long enough to live free. Bruce confronts the leper father — "Those men who bled the ground red at Falkirk, they fought for William Wallace... I will never be on the wrong side again."b33 Wallace recovers and reappears as a lone-wolf operator. The new approach is being adopted in silence; its articulation will not come until the Tower cell.
Escalation 2. Wallace rides a horse into Mornay's bedchamber and kills him with a flail; cuts Lochlan's throat at his own table among Lochlan's men. Bruce hears the news and says "no telling who'll be next. Maybe you. Maybe me."b34 The post-midpoint approach is being executed at lethal scale; the field of play has compressed from "command an army" to "operate as a single asymmetric body." Then the second Isabelle meeting — she has slipped out of London with intelligence, and they become lovers.b35 The escalation raises the stakes for the climax: the spent bodies have made the noble path take Wallace as a personal threat, which is what makes the next noble-brokered meeting the trap that sends him to the scaffold.
Climax. The London scaffold at Smithfield. Wallace has been hanged, drawn, and broken on the rack. The torturer leans close: "Cry out, 'Mercy.'" The crowd murmurs. The executioner pauses with the axe. Wallace draws a long breath and exhales "Freedom!" instead of "Mercy." The post-midpoint approach — pay the body publicly, refuse the plea, choose the word — is tested at maximum stakes and held. The axe falls.b39
Wind-Down. The head set on London Bridge, the body sent to the four corners of Britain. Bruce's voice-over: "It did not have the effect that Longshanks planned." Cut to 1314, the road to Bannockburn. Bruce, riding to do homage to Edward II, stops his column on the field, dismounts, and turns to the Scottish men-at-arms behind him: "You have bled with Wallace! Now bleed with me!" The Scottish line charges. Voice-over closes that they fought like Scotsmen and won their freedom.b40 The new equilibrium is institutional — the conversion that Wallace's body bought has landed in the man who held the sword at Falkirk, and the country that would not commit now does. The cost was sufficient and the cost was complete; there was no ideal approach Wallace failed to take.
