Physical Media Releases (The Truman Show) The Truman Show

The original 1999 DVD was bare-bones and arrived when the format was still new

Paramount Home Entertainment released The Truman Show on VHS on January 12, 1999, followed by DVD on January 26, 1999. The initial DVD was a product of the format's infancy — it contained the film in a non-anamorphic widescreen transfer and two theatrical trailers, nothing else. In 1999 that was standard; by the time the format matured, the disc looked anemic. (dvd talk)

The 2005 Special Edition added the documentary and deleted scenes

On August 23, 2005, Paramount issued a Special Edition that replaced the original disc entirely. The new release featured an anamorphic widescreen transfer at 1.85:1, Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, and a genuine supplemental package. (dvd talk)

Special features included:

  • "How's It Going to End? The Making of The Truman Show" — a two-part behind-the-scenes documentary running 43 minutes
  • "Faux Finishing: The Visual Effects of The Truman Show" — a 14-minute visual effects featurette
  • Four deleted and extended scenes (13 minutes total): "Product Placement," "Truman Suspicious," "The Future Cast Meeting," and "Truman Missing"
  • Photo gallery
  • Theatrical trailer and TV spot

The transfer was a significant upgrade — colors were well-defined, black levels solid, and the anamorphic enhancement properly showcased Peter Biziou's cinematography.

The Blu-ray arrived in 2008-2009 with the same extras

The Truman Show came to Blu-ray in stages: a Canadian release on December 30, 2008, a UK release on May 11, 2009, and the US release on July 21, 2009. The disc presented the film in 1080p with MPEG-4 AVC encoding at 1.85:1, with English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio. The supplemental package carried over the same features from the 2005 Special Edition DVD — the making-of documentary, the visual effects featurette, and the deleted scenes. (blu-ray.com)

The 25th anniversary 4K UHD is a complete remaster from the original negative

For the film's 25th anniversary, Paramount released a 4K Ultra HD edition on July 4, 2023. The disc was fully remastered from scans of the original camera negative, with the new transfer approved by Peter Weir — a significant detail, since Weir is famously particular about the presentation of his work. The 4K transfer received strong reviews, scoring 4.8 out of 5 for video quality at Blu-ray.com and described as "a gargantuan improvement" over the 2008 Blu-ray release. The Dolby Atmos soundtrack was a new addition — the Blu-ray had only offered TrueHD 5.1 — and all bonus features were carried on the standard Blu-ray disc in the set. (blu-ray.com)
