Physical Media Releases (Magnolia) Magnolia
Magnolia has been released on DVD, Blu-ray, and — announced for 2026 — 4K Ultra HD. The DVD Platinum Series edition remains notable for its 72-minute making-of documentary That Moment, which provides the most comprehensive behind-the-scenes account of the production.
DVD — New Line Platinum Series (2000)
The first home video release was a two-disc set in New Line Cinema's Platinum Series line. Special features included:
- That Moment: Magnolia Diary — a 72-minute documentary directed by Mark Rance, following the production from pre-production through theatrical release
- Frank T.J. Mackey "Seduce and Destroy" seminar footage (3:56)
- "Seduce and Destroy" infomercial (1:33) — the full-length commercial Anderson filmed with Tom Cruise and broadcast on late-night television
- Aimee Mann music video (4:46)
- Theatrical trailer, teaser trailer, and nine TV spots
The documentary has developed its own reputation as a valuable production record.
"A super-long documentary that chronicles the development of Magnolia from slightly after Boogie Nights release to the release of Magnolia theatrically." — That Moment: Magnolia Diary — Letterboxd
Blu-ray (2010)
New Line Home Video released the Blu-ray on January 19, 2010 as a BD-50 disc. Technical specifications:
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Video | 1080p, VC-1 codec |
| Aspect Ratio | 2.40:1 |
| Primary Audio | Dolby TrueHD 5.1 |
| Additional Audio | English and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 |
| Subtitles | English and Spanish |
| Runtime | 188 minutes |
The transfer was described as "a marked improvement from the previous home video iterations" with strong detail and texture, though occasional softness from focus-pulling prevented reference quality. The Dolby TrueHD audio mix received particular praise, with the frog rain sequence cited as demonstration-worthy material.
All special features from the Platinum Series DVD were carried over in standard definition. No new extras were produced. (highdefdigest, dvdbeaver)
