Physical Media Releases (Daylight) Daylight
Daylight (1996) has been released across four physical media generations — VHS, LaserDisc, DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD — with the 2025 Kino Lorber restoration representing the definitive home video presentation.
VHS and LaserDisc arrived in May 1997 with a DTS option
MCA/Universal Home Video released Daylight on VHS and LaserDisc on May 20, 1997. The LaserDisc edition featured a DTS soundtrack — a premium audio format that was a selling point for home theater enthusiasts in the late 1990s. (wikipedia)
The DVD added a director's commentary in 1998
Universal released Daylight on DVD on May 26, 1998. The disc included a theatrical trailer, multiple language options, and an audio commentary by director Rob Cohen. (wikipedia)
The standard Blu-ray offered a modest HD upgrade
Universal released a standard Blu-ray edition that presented the film in 1080p high definition. The disc carried over the existing supplements without significant additions. (blu-ray.com)
Kino Lorber's 2025 4K restoration is sourced from the original camera negative
Kino Lorber Studio Classics released Daylight on 4K UHD + Blu-ray on March 11, 2025. The restoration was scanned from the original 35mm camera negative and graded in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible). (blu-ray.com)
4K disc specs:
- Native 4K (2160p) / HEVC codec
- Dolby Vision and HDR10
- 1.85:1 aspect ratio
- DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and 2.0
"The Dolby Vision HDR grading allows the shadows of the collapsed tunnel to run a deep, inky black." — Billy Russell, Moviejawn (2025)
Russell noted that the 2.0 stereo track may be preferable to the 5.1 mix due to dialogue clarity issues in the surround configuration. (moviejawn)
Special features (on Blu-ray disc):
- Audio commentary by director Rob Cohen (archival)
- "The Making of Daylight" featurette (33:28)
- EPK promotional program (7 min)
- "Whenever There Is Love" music video (5 min)
- Two vintage theatrical trailers
The set includes a slipcover in the original pressing and is region-free on the 4K disc (Region A locked on the standard Blu-ray). (blu-ray.com)
A German special edition from Turbine Media also exists as a 4K UHD + Blu-ray slipcase release. (brotherbelial)
