The first sequel in the Dirty Harry cycle. Where the original film made Callahan the symbolic answer to a permissive system that couldn't stop Scorpio, Magnum Force turns the argument inside out: a squad of rookie motorcycle traffic cops, reading Callahan as a model, have organized themselves as a death squad and are executing San Francisco's untouchable criminals. Callahan is forced into the position of the institutionalist — the cop who insists, against younger men who have taken his reputation as a permission slip, that the line between police work and assassination still exists.
