John Hannah The Mummy (1999)
John Hannah (born April 23, 1962, East Kilbride, Scotland) played Jonathan Carnahan — Evelyn's older brother and the film's primary comic relief — in The Mummy (1999). He reprised the role in The Mummy Returns (2001) and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), and is returning for the planned 2027 fourth entry.
Hannah came to The Mummy from two of the 1990s' defining British romantic comedies
Hannah's profile in 1998 was built on two films: Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) and Sliding Doors (1998). In Four Weddings, he delivered the Auden poem "Funeral Blues" at the funeral of Simon Callow's character Gareth — a sequence widely credited with driving a 1990s sales surge for Auden's verse, including a Faber chapbook (Tell Me the Truth About Love) that reportedly sold around a quarter of a million copies. In Sliding Doors, he played the Monty Python-quoting love interest opposite Gwyneth Paltrow. (wikipedia)
Both performances established him as a charming, slightly rumpled romantic foil — exactly the dynamic Sommers needed for Jonathan, the lovable thief who never quite earns his way out of trouble.
Jonathan was written as comic relief and Hannah expanded the part
Jonathan exists structurally to absorb tension: when a scene gets too dark, Jonathan stumbles in and breaks it. The pickpocketed puzzle box,b5 the drunken campfire flirtation with Evelyn,b13 the comic stumble through Egyptian incantations under fireb35 b36 — all of it sits in the seam between adventure and screwball comedy. Hannah played the part as essentially good-natured, which kept the character likable through behaviors (cowardice, theft, opportunism) that would have read as villainous if played any other way.
"Brendan and John are both just really gorgeous and open-hearted people. I think we had really good chemistry." — Rachel Weisz, Newsweek (2024)
The climax depends on Jonathan: bound to the altar, Evelyn coaches him through the Book of Amun-Ra's symbols (she translates "Ahmenophus" across the chamber for him) so that he can read the spell that brings the mummy warrior guards under his command.b35 b36 Once Jonathan's incantation lands, Evelyn herself reads the counter-curse that strips Imhotep of his immortality, and Rick delivers the killing blow.b37 Handing the warrior-commanding spell to the cowardly thief — and trusting his fumbled reading to hold while Evelyn does the decisive translation work — is a structural choice that pays off the entire film's argument about scholarship deployed under pressure.
Hannah is returning for The Mummy 4
Hannah was officially confirmed for the 2027 fourth Mummy alongside Fraser and Weisz, with Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett directing.
"Not officially. I mean, I've heard and seen the rumours same as everybody else, and that would be fun to do." — John Hannah, on early reports of the sequel, Collider (2024)
He has since been confirmed officially. (collider)
Hannah's career has spanned film, prestige TV, and Marvel
Where Fraser pursued blockbusters and Weisz pursued Oscar drama, Hannah split the difference. He led the ITV drama McCallum (1995-1998) as a forensic pathologist. He played the gladiator-trainer Quintus Lentulus Batiatus across two seasons of Starz's Spartacus: Blood and Sand (2010) and Spartacus: Gods of the Arena (2011). He played the scientist Holden Radcliffe across seasons three and four of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2016-2017). The Mummy films punctuated a career that has otherwise lived primarily on television, and the role has remained the one international audiences associate with him.
