The final exchange of Three Days of the Condor (1975) takes place outside the Times Square office of the New York Times. Joe Turner has just told Higgins that he has given the entire story to the press. Higgins answers with a single question. The film holds on Turner's face and freezes.

The line is the most consequential closing line of any 1970s American thriller. It is the film's argument compressed to seven words.
The line was Pollack's, and it was deliberate
Pollack pushed for the ending against pressure to provide a more conventional resolution. Earlier drafts ended with the story already in print, or with Higgins arrested, or with Turner walking off into a crowd that confirmed his anonymity and safety. Pollack rejected each.

The "slight bit of doubt" is the film's central act of restraint. Pollack will not give the audience the comfort of confirmed publication. He will also not give the conspiracy the satisfaction of confirmed suppression. He stops the film at the moment of the bet.
The line is structurally a counter-bet
Through the entire third act, Turner has bet on the press. He goes to Joe Lawrie, a journalist friend, off-screen. He tells Kathy he can disappear into reportable evidence. The Times handoff is the film's resolution of the protagonist's plan.
Higgins's question proposes the counter-bet. Higgins does not say "we will stop them." He does not say "they will not run the story." He asks a question. The question contains the institution's claim that:
- The press is composed of human beings with employers, advertisers, and lawyers.
- A story about the CIA and oil, originating from a fired analyst with no surviving witnesses, is publishable only if the editors choose to publish it.
- The CIA has tools — pressure, off-the-record briefings, denial — that may make the editors choose otherwise.
The question's force depends on the audience knowing that none of this is paranoid. It is how the system works.
Higgins is not bluffing
The earlier scenes have shown Higgins as competent and informed. Turner has no reason to doubt that Higgins is doing the math correctly. The question is not a final taunt. It is an honest assessment from a man who has seen previous stories killed and previous whistleblowers contained.

The line has aged into prophecy
In 1975 the question pointed at Vietnam reporting, the Pentagon Papers, and Watergate — three recent cases in which the press had, after struggle, printed. The audience could read the question as a worry that history would not be kind enough to repeat itself.
In the decades since, the question has become harder rather than easier. The consolidation of media ownership, the collapse of newsroom budgets, the migration of investigative journalism to nonprofit and online venues, the rise of social-media discourse that buries individual stories within hours, and the routine targeting of whistleblowers under espionage statutes have all made "How do you know they'll print it?" a more pointed line in 2025 than in 1975.

Turner does not answer
