Duncan Jones on Outland Outland

Duncan Jones directed Moon (2009), the most visible descendant of Outland's blue-collar science fiction lineage. He has discussed the connection in several interviews around Moon's release.

Jones placed Outland in a lineage with Silent Running and Alien

In a Den of Geek interview, Jones described how conversations with Sam Rockwell circled back to the grounded sci-fi of the late 1970s and early 1980s:

"And we started talking about the science fiction films in the late 70s and 80s, films like Outland, Silent Running and Ridley Scott's Alien, where you'd have these science fiction films but with blue collar sensibilities, that were much more character driven." — Duncan Jones, Den of Geek (2009)

Peter Hyams loved Moon

In an IndieLondon interview, Jones described Hyams' reaction to Moon as his favourite response to the film. The wiki's Critical Reception and Legacy (Outland) page uses a shortened excerpt; the full passage is:

"To be honest, my favourite response so far was Peter Hyams, who directed Outland. Obviously, there's a big homage to Outland in Moon. I obviously had Ridley Scott's response, which was great. But Peter Hyams really loved Moon and was really enthusiastic about it. He was also enthusiastic about the fact we'd remembered Outland and had remembered it fondly. I think, for him, it was like some kind of edification that there were people out there who loved his film. So, that was a really lovely feeling." — Duncan Jones, IndieLondon (2009)
