Ben Burtt, as sound designer People & Technology
Ben Burtt (born July 12, 1948) is an American sound designer who created the sound effects for Star Wars (1977), including the lightsaber hum, Darth Vader's breathing, and R2-D2's voice. Before his work on Star Wars, science-fiction films tended to use electronic-sounding effects for futuristic devices; Burtt pioneered a more natural approach, blending "found sounds" — the lightsaber hum came from a film projector idling combined with feedback from a broken television set, and the blaster effect started with hitting a guy-wire on a radio tower with a hammer. He designed the pod scream and other sound effects for Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), coming to the production fresh off Star Wars. His son Benny Burtt followed him into the field and works as an assistant sound FX editor at Skywalker Sound. (ask.video)
