Beat Split Log
A vault-level log of every time a Backbeats file beat is split into sub-beats (e.g., b35 → b35a + b35b). When you split a beat, add a row here with the date/time, the film, the original beat, and the new anchors. This log lets future passes audit when and why beat counts inflated.
Convention: when splitting a single beat into a lead-up half and a certainty half, use letter suffixes a / b (or a / b / c if a three-way split is needed). Either keep the original ^bN anchor on the first half and add ^bNb to the second half, OR rename both to ^bNa and ^bNb. Either is acceptable, but be consistent within a film, and log which convention was used so downstream references can be updated.
| Date | Time | Film | Original beat | New anchors | Reason | Operator |

| 2026-05-10 | ~14:00 | Lethal Weapon | b35 | b35a + b35b | Tighten climax to Riggs releasing the chokehold at b35b; b35a holds the lawn fight | write-climax tighten pass |
| 2026-05-10 | ~14:00 | Prisoners | b37 | b37 + b37b | Tighten climax to the deadbolted-door opening at b37b; original ^b37 retained on the return + sweep escalation half |
write-climax tighten pass |
| 2026-05-10 | ~14:00 | The Shawshank Redemption | b36 | b36 + b36b | Tighten climax to Andy's river emergence at b36b; original ^b36 retained on the flashback-crawl escalation half |
write-climax tighten pass |
| 2026-05-10 | ~14:00 | There Will Be Blood | b37 | b37a + b37b | Tighten climax to the foul-line bludgeoning at b37b; b37a holds the chase, thrown balls, and lifted pin | write-climax tighten pass |
| 2026-05-10 | ~15:00 | The Truman Show | b39 | b39a + b39b | Tighten climax to Truman stepping through the EXIT door at b39b; b39a holds Christof's offer, catchphrase, and Truman's bow. Split completed in repair pass after initial tighten batch failed to perform it. | write-climax tighten pass (repair) |
| 2026-05-10 | ~17:00 | Three Days of the Condor | b40 | b40a + b40b | Climax is "They've got all of it" / "I told them a story" (b40a) — the certainty-moment the disclosure has already happened. Wind-down (b40b) lives inside the same on-screen scene: Higgins's rebuke, "you'll be a very lonely man," "how do you know they'll print it," walk past Salvation Army band, freeze frame. Conversation-internal split for a film with no separate wind-down scene. | manual correction (user feedback) |
| 2026-05-10 | ~17:15 | The Fifth Element | b34 | b34a + b34b | Tighten climax to the firing of the divine light at b34b; b34a holds Cornelius's instruction, Korben's "Because I love you," and the kiss. The audience-certainty moment is the beam striking the dark planet, not the declaration that supplies the missing element. | write-climax tighten pass |
| 2026-05-10 | ~18:00 | Daylight | b40 | b40a + b40b | Tighten two-clause climax envelope to b39–b40a: b40a holds the surface breach + Maddy keeping Kit afloat (Growth-clause certainty-moment); b40b holds the bracelet handoff to Grace (wind-down sub-arc closure). | write-climax tighten pass |
| 2026-05-10 | ~18:15 | Blade Runner | b35 | b35 + b35a + b35b | Tighten climax to Roy's pull-up at b35a (original ^b35 retained as alias on the climax half — the lead-up was already covered by b34 girder-leap). b35b holds tears-in-rain monologue, Roy's death, dove flying — wind-down register addressed to Deckard as witness. |
write-climax tighten pass |
| 2026-05-10 | ~18:30 | Alien | b35 | b35a + b35b | Tighten climax to the engine blast at b35b — the moment the alien tumbles into the void. b35a holds strap-in, "You Are My Lucky Star," hatch open, and harpoon hit (alien clings to shuttle exterior by line). The harpoon hit alone is not certainty — the alien is still attached; the engine firing is the gesture that converts the position into a verdict. | write-climax tighten pass |
| 2026-05-10 | ~18:45 | The Frighteners | b37 | b37 + b37b | Tighten climax to demonic forces dragging Bartlett and Patricia down at b37b; original ^b37 retained on the Patricia-attacks / ghost-Frank-seizes-her lead-up half |
write-climax tighten pass |
| 2026-05-15 | ~18:00 | The Frighteners | b37 | b37a + b37b | Re-split after rewinder. A 2026-05-13 rewinder pass had flattened the beat's body content while leaving the b37a and b37b anchors as duplicates. Today's pass restores the actual content split — b37a holds Frank's spirit seizing Patricia and hauling her toward Heaven (test running); b37b holds the demonic worm-mouth taking Bartlett and Patricia into Hell while Heaven opens behind Frank (certainty-moment). Climax label moved to b37b. Original ^b37 anchor preserved on the b37a beat as alias. |
write-climax (re-split after rewinder flatten) |
| 2026-05-10 | ~18:45 | Gran Torino | b55 | b55 + b55b | Tighten climax to the Zippo reveal at b55b (Walt's hand comes out with a lighter, not a pistol, the gang fires, cruciform fall); original ^b55 retained on the walk-and-taunt lead-up half |
write-climax tighten pass |
| 2026-05-10 | ~19:00 | In the Line of Fire | b34 | b34a + b34 (b34b) | Tighten climax to Frank stepping into the bullet at b34b (the body across the gun-line — the certainty answer to the whole-film question); b34a holds re-entry, seat ID, Booth standing and drawing. Original ^b34 retained as alias on the certainty half. |
write-climax tighten pass |
| 2026-05-10 | ~19:00 | The Last Samurai | b41 | b41 (b41a) + b41b | Tighten two-clause climax to the artillery captain's cease-fire and the Imperial line bowing at b41a (witness-conversion certainty-moment); b41b holds Katsumoto's seppuku, cherry blossoms, "perfect, they are all perfect" as executes-clause wind-down. Original ^b41 retained as alias on b41a. |
write-climax tighten pass |
| 2026-05-10 | ~19:00 | Lethal Weapon 2 | b36 | b36a + b36 (b36b) | Tighten climax to Murtaugh's bullet through Rudd's head at b36b ("It's just been revoked" — the shield voided from inside the partnership); b36a holds Rudd's "Diplomatic immunity!" invocation as escalation. Original ^b36 retained as alias on the certainty half. |
write-climax tighten pass |
| 2026-05-10 | ~19:15 | The Out-of-Towners | b35 | b35a + b35b | Tighten climax to "That's what I told them, word for word" at b35b; b35a holds Gwen's recitation of the hoped-for speech over dissolves. The flashback-frame test is the report, not the offscreen interview itself. | write-climax tighten pass |
| 2026-05-10 | ~19:15 | Rental Family | b40 | b40a + b40b | Tighten climax to the shrine mirror at b40b (Phillip sees his own reflection — internal-stakes certainty-moment); b40a holds Phillip returning to Mia under his real name (the post-midpoint approach stepping out of the booking sheet). | write-climax tighten pass |
| 2026-05-10 | ~17:30 | Lost in Translation | b37 | b37a + b37 (b37b) | Tighten climax to the whisper-kiss-and-changed-face at b37b (the audience-certainty moment that the bounded experience has been received whole); b37a holds the cab stopping, crowd-run, "Hey, you," and embrace as escalation. Original ^b37 retained as alias on the certainty half. |
write-climax tighten pass |
| 2026-05-10 | ~19:30 | Shanghai Noon (B) | b35 | b35a + b35b | Tighten climax to the bell drop at b35b — Wang dismantles the bell, the rope around Lo Fong cinches, Roy kills Van Cleef on the same heartbeat. b35a holds the East/West speech and altar-floor fight as escalation. | write-climax tighten pass |
| 2026-05-10 | ~19:30 | The Taking of Pelham One Two Three | b40 | b40a + b40b | Tighten climax to the sneeze + "Gesundheit" + recognition at b40a; b40b holds the slow turn back as freeze-frame wind-down. Conversation-internal split for a film whose entire wind-down lives inside the climactic scene (cf. Three Days of the Condor). Downstream reference in reference/values.md updated from ^b40 to ^b40a. |
write-climax tighten pass |
| 2026-05-10 | ~17:30 | Sabrina | b38 | b38a + b38b | Tighten climax to the involuntary punch and walkout at b38b ("a previous engagement"); b38a holds David's late arrival, contract-signing, gossip-column reading, and goading lead-up. Downstream references in reference/values.md re-routed: merger-rescue → b38a, boardroom climax → b38b. |

| 2026-05-10 | ~21:00 | My Cousin Vinny | annotator b39 (Mona Lisa Vito testimony) | b37 + b38 + b39 | Three-way split to isolate the audience-certainty moment. b37 holds positraction + the Skylark's regular differential; b38 holds the curb-mark observation + the Skylark's solid rear axle + independent rear suspension; b39 holds the 1963 Pontiac Tempest comprehensive feature match + the metallic-mint-green callback (Trotter waives cross immediately after — this IS the climax certificate). | two-paths/Step 3 backbeats build |
| 2026-05-10 | ~21:00 | My Cousin Vinny | annotator b3 + b4 (pulled over + arrest at gunpoint) | b3 (merged) | Merge: continuous action across the same minute and a half with no structural seam between them. The roadside escalation reads as one beat from audience experience. | two-paths/Step 3 backbeats build |
| 2026-05-10 | ~21:00 | My Cousin Vinny | annotator b22 + b23 (brick monologue / Alakazam recollection + Norton execution / J.T. taunts) | b20 (merged) | Merge: the "quintessential Gambini" → "quintessential Norton" smash cut at the end of the brick monologue binds the two scenes thematically and narratively; the J.T. taunt is short connective material rather than a beat of its own. | two-paths/Step 3 backbeats build |
| 2026-05-10 | ~22:00 | The Town | b39 | b39a + b39b | Tighten climax to Doug saying goodbye and hanging up at b39a (audience-certainty moment that the last piece of the maximalist goal has been refused); b39b holds the walk to South Station and the southbound-train boarding as wind-down executes-clause. | write-climax tighten pass |
| 2026-05-10 | ~22:30 | Rollerball | annotator b30 ("This wasn't meant to be a game" + scored goal) | b35 (Climax) + b36 (score completes) | Split annotator's combined climax beat. b35 holds the audience-certainty moment — Jonathan standing over the downed NY skater and declining to bring the spiked gauntlet down ("Game? This wasn't meant to be a game! Never!"). b36 holds the long-circle skate and scoring the only goal (the affirmation that follows the test). The decline is the rivet; the score completes it on a held visual gap. | two-paths/Step 3 backbeats build |
| 2026-05-10 | ~22:30 | Rollerball | annotator b24 (Ella visits — the conversation) | b28 + b29 | Split annotator's 6-minute Ella beat. b28 holds the conversation proper — Ella counting scars, Jonathan's Rome-gate confession, the corporate sales pitch "all they want is a kind of incidental control" — and carries the Falling Action rivet label. b29 holds the rule-set delivery (no substitutions, no time limit) plus Jonathan's "You my big reward?" close. The Falling Action turn lands on her sustained plea, not on the rule reveal. | two-paths/Step 3 backbeats build |
Notes
- Always update downstream references when splitting. Grep the film's wiki directory for
#^bN[^a-z0-9]to find any stale anchors and route each to either theaorbhalf based on the citing page's prose context. - Re-run any control trajectory chart (
/control-graph) for the film after a split — the new beats add data points that should be scored. - The split is permanent unless un-split. If a future analysis re-merges the beats, log that here too (one row with the merged anchor in the New anchors column and "merge" in the Reason column).
