Alan Silvestri (born March 26, 1950, New York City) composed the score for Cast Away (2000). He has scored every Robert Zemeckis film since Romancing the Stone (1984), a partnership of more than four decades that includes Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, Contact, the Cast Away / What Lies Beneath pair, and the 2024 Hanks reunion Here. Cast Away is, in his catalogue, the unusual one — the film for which his most important contribution was deciding not to write music.

The first score cue arrives the moment Chuck looks back at the island

The structural placement of the score is precise. Silvestri's first cue in the second half of the film does not arrive when Chuck is rescued, or when he sees the cargo ship, or when he first realizes his raft has crossed the reef. While he was inside the experience, the silence was the right setting; once he has crossed back over, the score reappears, and the audience hears for the first time in over an hour that they are watching a film, not a documentary.
