The Prestige (2006)

Control vs. Agency (Audience Perspective)

Angier's agency is consistently high even when his control is low — he is always scheming, always counterattacking, always choosing the next move in the rivalry. When Borden debuts the Transported Man and control drops to 10, Angier's agency stays at 45 because he immediately starts working the problem: hiring Root, sending Olivia as a spy, traveling to Colorado. The Caldlow reveal shows the audience that agency was always higher than they knew. But the twin reveal and the drowned duplicates reframe everything: Angier's relentless agency was in service of a false premise, and the cost was monstrous. High agency doesn't mean wisdom.
