Coma (1978)

Control vs. Agency (Audience Perspective)

Susan Wheeler's agency is remarkably high throughout — she keeps investigating despite every warning, every threat, every institutional door slammed in her face. Control collapses as the conspiracy tightens around her, but agency barely dips until she's physically drugged and strapped to a table. The widening gap between the two lines is the film's engine: a woman who will not stop choosing to dig deeper precisely when the smart move would be to stop. In Act Five, agency drops to zero for the first time — not because Susan gives up, but because Harris removes her ability to choose at all.
